The $20 billion incentive auction was a complicated beast, and its auction design and implementation have rightly been celebrated, but they were just part of the successful spectrum reallocation process. The operations research and analytical pieces were crucial as well, and the key people included an internal team at the FCC as well as researchers from Auctionomics. This week, INFORMS – the leading international association for operations research and analytics – announced that it has awarded the 2018 Franz Edelman prize to the FCC for its use of OR as part of this project. I offer my congratulations to the whole team for this fantastic honor!
